This historic senior housing community in southwestern North Carolina is unique. The Rt. Rev. George Henry Bishop of Western North Carolina 1948-1974. The original community was located in the eleven-room Timsons' summer home. The community grew rapidly and now has 54 cottages and 2 apartment buildings. The community offers many amenities, such as a formal dining room, a fitness center, community meeting rooms, and many activity rooms.

Senior Housing Facility - 62 Units

The Episcopal House Apartments is the latest 62-unit senior housing development in Allentown. This community offers newly renovated apartments to seniors age 62 and over. Apartments are easily accessible from public transportation and have onsite management and maintenance. It is near a YMCA senior center and numerous other medical facilities. Seniors who desire to live in a familiar setting while still enjoying a high-quality life style will love this community.

Other Asheville senior apartments are also available, including the Episcopal House with 62 units. The community has a Wait List for these apartments, and residents must earn below 50 percent of the local median income to be eligible. Tenants must earn between $41,100 to $46,950 annually. This community is smoke free and offers daily activities, such as bingo and cards games.

Free-standing chapel

The Evangelist Chapel can be found at Saint John's on the Lake. This is an independent chapel located in the community's episcopal retirement area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Its design is inspired by the Syrian Christian synagogue churches. Alvin Holm, architect, and Steven Semes (designer) designed the interior. Both architects envisaged a chapel that would be a center of spiritual renewal, worship, as well as social activity.


Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community has a chapel freestanding. St. Giles Chapel functions as a parish chapel with an elected vestry, and bishop visits. Although the chapel is associated with the Episcopal Church in some way, its services are ecumenical. The church's presence at a retirement community is an important element of the overall design.

The Rt. Rev. Rev. George Henry, Bishop in Western North Carolina from 1948-1974, donated the land. Initial housing for the community was in the Timsons' 11-room summer home. A new healthcare center was opened in March 2001. Now the community has memory care, assisted living, and skilled nursing. Residents have access to a full-service dining establishment, a fitness room, a large community meeting space, and many activities rooms.
